Memorias en Ambar

Edition 1 of 3 + 2AP This piece centres an archival ID photograph of my grandfather, surrounded by fragments of other images transferred onto a broken piece of yellow glass. Illuminated from behind, the glass is reminiscent of a piece of amber – fossilized over millennia, preserving an unknown ancient history within. The choice to use glass fragments throughout this series for images specifically related to my grandfather reflects the fragmented nature of my knowledge of him, pieced together from stories and photographs discovered over time. Having never met him, these images became a way to reconstruct his identity and, by extension, my own. In a way, after seeing so many new photos of him, it felt like I was meeting him for the first time. The fractured glass symbolizes the disjointed process of piecing together a diasporic identity, where memory and family history are constantly reconstructed from afar.
